Boats in Mallorca spend many months laid up between seasons. Left on board with salt and damp, cushions and canvas come back in spring with mould, stains and seized zips. This is what we recommend in October or November.
1. Get the salt out first
Salt attracts moisture. Rinse covers with fresh water and mild soap — no bleach or harsh cleaners that strip the water-repellent finish. Rinse zips with fresh water and add a little silicone lubricant.
2. Dry everything completely
Dry covers and foam fully, in the shade with airflow. Foam stored damp is the main cause of mould and odour. Quick-dry foam dries in hours; interior foam can take days.
3. Store dry and ventilated
- Off the boat if possible, somewhere dry.
- Upright or flat, with nothing heavy on top.
- Never in sealed plastic bags — they trap moisture. Use breathable covers.
4. Check before the season
Winter is the time to fix open seams, loose snaps and zips, or to replace cushions that have lost their shape. In spring every workshop is fully booked.
If you’d rather not deal with it
With our winter care service we collect cushions, sunpads and canvas, clean and check them, store them dry in our Palma workshop and refit them in spring.
